Beyond The Towers - Part 1

The street lights offered more light than the sun itself down in the streets, buried deep between the towering buildings that surrounded. It was like being an ant in a field of grass, all you could ever see is the next blade, never the whole field or what lay beyond it. Unlike a grassy field though this place is much more dangerous, it's chaos down there.

The boys were just like the ants, all they saw was what could be seen between the buildings, none of them ever thought of venturing out beyond their scope of the world. To them this was the world, crowded walkways, traffic filled streets, angry people. It never entered their minds as they spent every day like the previous, hitting up each arcade they could, swindling the crowds of a few quarters from one sad story or another. There was no motive other than the next fun thing to do.

Never was there a reason to look for something else until today, the two of them thought as they were pinned up against the cold brick wall of a dark alleyway. Home didn't feel like home to them anymore, all they wanted was a way out. From the corner of their eyes they could see the countless people walk by the alleyway, none bothering to stop and offer help. No one cared here, no one would help.

"You think you own these streets punk?" One of the thugs rhetorically asked Ryan as he held a tight grip around his neck. His hands were massive compared to Ryan, his black hooded sweater and loose fitting jeans hid his true stature, but Ryan knew he wasn't someone to be toyed with.

Terrified Ryan just shook his head, incapable of uttering a word past his fear shut lips. "That's what I thought!" The thug responded, following shortly after with a slap across the side of Ryan's head. Jerry was in the same situation next to him but was not questioned as Ryan was, the other thug chose to let his friend do the talking. They weren't really looking for answers to their questions, they were just making a point, one we understood very well.

"I find you two punks out he...." His threat was interrupted when Ryan desperately kicked out his leg, his worn down sneaker landing directly in the thug's crotch. Jerry quickly followed his lead and did the same to the man that held him.

The two boys didn't bother to watch their attackers curl up on the concrete ground, rather they ran off into the crowd, weaving their way through it to disappear into the depths of the city. They had been through much in their life, growing up in a foster home they weren't watched that closely amongst all of the other kids there, they had free reign.
